Looking at a bike, is there something I’m missing?

Hello, I’m 19 and looking at a GS500, Ninja 500, Katana 600 or possibly a Ninja 650 as a first bike. I’m heavily leaning towards the GS500.
I will be commuting about 30 miles (round trip) each day to college. I live in MD, just north of DC. I have the option of bringing my car to school, but would need to put about the same amount of money into work on the car as it would cost me to buy a bike, but obviously, the gas and insurance are more expensive, or buying a bike (~$5000 for the bike, gear and MSF course). The insurance for the car is roughly 6 times as much as the bike (which is quoted at $350). It seems like the bike would be a cheaper option, as I wont be putting more than 6k miles on it during the school year.
Am I missing something that’s making me think the bike is cheaper, I’ve included the cost to maintain the bike, the insurance, the cost of the bike (which isn’t really an issue, I’d be putting out the money either way), the cost of gear and the cost of the safety course.
Also, any advice on having a bike as your main form of transportation?
