This past weekend I bought a used 04 Ninja 500 for just $1800. I know it sounds to good to be true but the bike only has 1,634 miles on it plus the owner threw in all their old gear in for free. So that means an HJC helmet (can’t figure out what model), Joe Rocket jacket and gloves and some nice leather ‘vintage’ (they’re probably 35 years old lol) racing pants. The only thing that needs work done on it is to clean the carbs out a bit but I’m doing that with a friend in a couple weeks. And yes this is my first bike and I am way excited to go riding I just need the weather to get better…stupid Idaho weather…anyways just wanted to share this awesome deal I found cause right now I’m on cloud 9 and I don’t know when I’ll be back

March 3, 2009 at 5:39 pm #16872KellisanthParticipantIf anything, I would suggest getting a new helmet. Honestly.
Unless you know the age of the helmet, the condition its been in (been dropped, stored properly etc etc) … that’s one thing I wouldn’t really want to mess with, safety wise.
Of course, that might be rumours, but I would err on the safe side to be honest. At least you know, when you buy a new one, it WILL fit you properly. And not rattle your head about like a mexican jumpin’ bean in a tin can.
But the rest of the kit though, how does it fit? too roomy, or too tight? Any tears or stress?
March 3, 2009 at 5:45 pm #16873MattParticipantI hope you have experience cleaning carbs… not fun, if you don’t! But well worth the money saved. And putting in that elbow grease yourself will make the bike all the more “yours”.
I’d be careful with that helmet though. Buying (or getting) a used helmet is putting your hands in the life of the previous owner. Did he drop it? A dropped helmet (not just crashed, but dropped from a few feet onto concrete) can affect its ability to protect you. In the store, a dropped helmet is a bought helmet, for good reason – they can’t sell it to anyone else after you’ve dropped it.
Secondly, how old is the helmet? The glues, resins, and foam used in motorcycle helmets break down with time. Cheap helmets (which the HJC is) should be replaced, crashed or not, every three years. The higher end helmets (Arai and Shoei) every five years (same goes for bicycle helmets btw).
Great deal on the bike, now use $150 of the well saved cash to get yourself a helmet that fits you perfectly, is comfortable, looks cool, and you know will keep what is really important safe – you.
March 3, 2009 at 11:11 pm #16875Jon D.ParticipantHelmets have earned the nickname ” brain bucket ” for a reason and is, in my opinion, the most important piece of safety gear for a rider. The next 2 things to keep in great repair are tires and brakes. The bike essentially has only 1 square inch of contact with the pavement at any time so check them for wear and dry rot. I used to do tractor/trailer repair and my old boss’s rule was stopping, steering, then you can worry about putting the vehicle in motion. without the first two, you don’t want that vehicle to move. Congrats on the purchase but use these principals prior to hitting the streets, We all want to hear your success stories. Ride safe and God bless. Jon D.
March 5, 2009 at 5:45 am #16917jmango95Participantsurprisingly everything does fit me…really well. its kinda weird but the woman who sold me the bike was pretty much the same size as me im 5′ 6″. the jacket has no tears or any other imperfections (other than the sitting in the garage for awhile musty smell…really, it all smells like that). the helmet itself is about a year and half old (huge guesstimation, yes its a word) so yeah im goin to probably get a new helmet. have been looking at the gmax 68s. looks sweet and got an award in wanna say 07 for being helmet of the year from webBikeWorld. also im cleaning out my carbs with my friend who is cmt certified and hes also gonna look over all my gear for me. so ill know my bike inside and out and be safe as can be. heres the sight for that helmet. http://www.gmaxhelmet.com
March 5, 2009 at 12:56 pm #16921Sangria7ParticipantSo I have been testing AFX’s new FX-16 helmet…and its awesome…I mean for under $150 it is not only DOT approved, its Snell and ECE approved….
Best helmet yet (from the 7 I own/tested)….I should have the review in a month or two.

Bottomline: Get yourself a new helmet that you know might save your life!!
March 5, 2009 at 1:00 pm #16922Sangria7ParticipantI tested this helmet and its good and all…however, I dont wear it anymore as I find it bulky.
But here is the review that I put in the magazine I write for (go to page 28):

2007 there was not a lot of helmet innovations and Gmax certainly proved to outdo a lot of manufacturers but I must say AFX has really impressed me this year (see post below). They are certainly top notch as I have been in contact with their President and they have tons coming out this year….more to follow.
March 5, 2009 at 4:20 pm #16935jmango95Participantfor all the info on those helmets that afx one looks sweet! It amazes me how many manufacturers go completely unnoticed it seems. But anyways thanks for the review.
