I have just today bought a new Shoei RF 1000 Nightwing helmet
it’s great and the fit is perfect, but the padding is a bit too snug.
Now I’m told that it should loosen up with wear and that you want the
helmet to be as snug as possible to begin with. The only worries I have is that with the padding supposedly packing in,
will I have considerable amount of freedom in space? After wearing the helmet for 15-30 minutes, I found that my temples and
cheeks were sore.
Should I just wear it out and let the helmet settle?
Or is there a problem with size, am I wearing too small?March 4, 2009 at 12:34 am #16877Sangria7ParticipantThe helmet fitting guidelines:

Bottomline they are always very tight brand new and it will take several hours of wear even weeks to break it in properly.

Most helmets will fit a bit snug when new, but it they are creating hot spots after this short a time, it’s likely either too small or the wrong shape for your head.
Personally, I’d take it back to at least see if they could switch out the padding (not sure about this model, but many have different thicknesses available).

because it hasn’t been broken in yet but offered that he could see if there was a problem
if I came back in with it.It’ll be a hassle to go back for me right now, so I’ll try wearing it in and if that doesn’t work
I’ll definitely take it back. He does tell me there are pads to switch out, but only for the cheeks…Hopefully, the padding will flatten out a bit?

check online for a helmet-specific store, they will be the most helpful in finding a helmet that fits your head right.
just a warning tho, they will likely be more expensive than online
March 4, 2009 at 1:16 pm #16885DKParticipantI have the same helmet and had the same issue that while the large was too sloppy to consider but the medium was very snug. It took about two weeks for my head to feel just right inside the helmet.
That said, did you try on other helmet brands to determine if maybe your head shape would be better suited for a different manufacturer?
March 4, 2009 at 6:00 pm #16888mjolnir85ParticipantThe HJC and Icon fit a bit loose, however last night I tried keeping the helmet on
for about an hour, and it wasn’t so bad minus the fact that I was getting hot from wearing
it inside the house! Of course, I flipped the visor up and the heat dissipated as wel.I think the size will fit nicely once I break them in, I suppose I was just a little anxious
from picking up my first helmet! Thanks everyone
March 4, 2009 at 11:15 pm #16901PhilUpParticipantMake sure the helmet is for your head shape. You can only know this by trying on a variety of helmets from different manufacturers. My helmet fit snug, and I had a little pressure on the center of my forehead. I had headaches for the first 2 weeks or so til the helmet was broken in. Now it fits and feels perfect and best of all, no headaches!
March 12, 2009 at 11:47 pm #17014nau_lax21Participantthis should help
March 13, 2009 at 3:19 pm #17021Clay DowlingParticipantI’ve always been a little worried about my helmet, because I’m wearing a XXL, but per the video I have the right size. It pushed my cheeks in slightly, and there’s no risk of getting my fingers between my head and the helmet. Even my balaclava is a tight fit and gives me a headache after about an hour.
