Cam ball bearing failed, 1987 Honda CH150 Elite

Post by Rick10 » Sat Nov 11, 2017 9:44 pm

My cam ball bearing has failed. It is an NTN 16002 bearing. But the outer race is trapped on the camshaft. The manual says to buy the cam and chain sprocket as an assembly. Unfortunately, none exist at the dealers. Does anyone know how to separate the chain sprocket from camshaft?

Here is a used one appears to be included with the head if the pictures are correct. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-elite-ch ... PG&vxp=mtr
And here is just the cam. https://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CH150-D- ... Oc&vxp=mtr
I am sure the timing gear can be pressed off, but be sure to fabricate a jig before removal to facilitate proper cam timing when pressing it back together.
Do you have a press ? If not use a friends press.

I have a hand press, good for about 500 lbs. That did not do it. I am about to go searching for someone with a press. Note
my added comment on the picture above regarding what I assume is a rotational index slot on the shaft, so that the sprocket likely will only go back on in the correct position to the cam. Thanks for your comments and parts availability list.

Wow that's a serious failure! What was it like to be driving at the time?

I have no expertise on pressing, so I'd keep looking for a complete unit. Sellers are parting out Elite 150's all the time on eBay. You could message a seller who is listing lots of engine parts and see if they have the cam available.

If you live near a vo-tech school I’m sure they would have a press.
