I was so exited to buy this scooter with only 4,750 miles on it. Big problem though, it only gets 40 miles to the gallon. It starts fine and idles down - choke seems to be working properly. I don't smell any gas coming out of the exhaust. Owner said compression checked out fine. Engine runs fairly smooth throughout all speed ranges. Please give me some ideas. Idles a little uneven sometimes. Would a cleaning of the carb help much. I have a 1983 Riva 180 that gets 70 mpg. Thanks, Mike Minnesota

I also have an 84 vino riva.. don't know the mileage, as i am still trying to register it without a title.. any input on that subject? i have a bill of sale. apparently it's been sitting in the guys garage for 15 yrs.. it's my understanding that these were considered mopeds when they were made, and thus needed no registration? the dmv ran the vin and nothing came up

I bought mine from a private party a couple of months ago. It did have a title and the title has been sent in, waiting for new one in my name. I don't know about your situation. Thanks for your reply.

I'd start with the easy maintenance stuff such as the spark plug, tire PSI and air filter. There could be one specific problem here, but often it's a combo of smaller problems. Check out the rollers and drive belt. If they're worn then you're cruising at a lower gear ratio which hurts MPG.

Beyond that, I'd check the compression for yourself. At 4750 miles, your exhaust is likely fine unless there was previous problems with the scooter running rich that ended up adding carbon to the exhaust.
