The 2021 Surface 604 eBike Lineup + Our Take On Each Model

Surface 604, an eBike brand based in Vancouver, Canada that was founded in 2013, is back again with four updated models for 2021. Like their 2020 models, the 2021 Surface 604’s continue to refine both the integration of technology and the build quality of their bikes.

But, as eBike enthusiasts may note, as multi-year ElectricBikeReview.com award winners, Surface 604 isn’t exactly the underdog looking to make a name for themselves. With nearly a decade of product iteration behind them, Surface 604 is the incumbent player in the “best bang for your buck” category in every respective segment they compete in.

Buyers looking to move beyond the inexpensive (and foreign) no-name online-only brands (and the hit or miss quality that comes with them) will want something bigger and badder than what they are used to. And they’ll want something built to last, since moving into the “brand-name” space is also more money than what you’ll find online on outlets like Alibaba and Amazon.

Those buyers would do well to pursue the Surface 604 bike lineup for 2021, as you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better bike (or eBike) for the money.

2021 Surface 604 Colt

2021 Surface 604 Colt Key Specifications

  • Price: $2,299 USD / $2,999 CAD
  • Buy: Surface 604
  • Motor: 500W (Peaks At 750W) Bafang Motor / 65 Nm of torque
  • Est. Range: 45 mi / 72 km (14 Ah), 65 mi / 105 km (20 Ah)
  • Top Speed: 28 mph / 45 kph

A classic commuter for the daily rider, the Surface 604 Colt brings many ergonomic features to the bike that daily riders will appreciate, while shipping with a powerful 500W Bafang motor (which peaks at 750W).

The upgraded components are fed with larger batteries (compared to the 2020 model year), which now start at a 14 Ah battery but can be upgraded to a 20 Ah unit for an extra $300.

Range is an excellent 45 miles (~72 km) using moderate pedal assist, though riders who are liberal on the throttle may see a range that is 50% of that figure. Opting for the larger battery adds another 20 mi / 30 km of range.

Surface 604 has spent the better part of a decade learning what matters for eBike riders, and the evolution of their bikes is obvious when you look at the 2021 Colt vs. bikes from years prior. To the untrained eye, or to that of a passerby as you whiz past at 45 kph, the Colt doesn’t look any different than that of a standard mid-bar bicycle… and that’s kind of the point.

The 2021 Colt starts at $2,299 USD ($2,999 CAD) for the 14 Ah battery and can be upgraded to a 20 Ah battery for an additional $300 USD ($400 CAD). The Colt can be had with a 17.5” or 19.5” frame, making it suitable for riders from 5’2” to 6’6”. The 2021 Colt is only available in black.

This stylish addition to the Surface lineup features some notable upgrades, specifically an even-keeled power distribution and a whisper-quiet motor that will bring you where you want to, when you want to.

The bike’s power includes torque-sensing performance of 104 cadence pulses per revolution. Pair that with a 9-speed drivetrain and the convenient thumb-push activated throttle, and you’ll be coasting past the traditional bespoked beauties of the past.

The battery provides an easy-going 45 miles per charge, with the potential to upgrade to a Tesla-sized 48V20ah (960wh) 5000mah battery for $400 and an additional 20 miles of range. And with the bigger wheels and wider tire upgrade, you’re guaranteed a comfortable scoot on your commute.

The 2021 Rook starts at a nifty price of $2,299 USD /$2,999 CAD, with the potential price going up to $2,499 USD /$3,015 CAD should you decide to upgrade to the 48V20ah (960wh) 5000mah battery.

The bike comes in the classic colors of black and white, and sports frame sizing options in S/M (17.5”) and M/L (19.5”), respectively.

At ‘Best Bang for Buck’, this addition to your collection will boast spiffy speeds, elegant lines and a longevity of power that means business.

This powerhouse of a bike comes with a full deck of specs, designed to carry you (and whatever else you want to carry), in style. At 1,000 torque samples per second, the energy output is no joke – and neither is the torque sensation, intelligently designed to pick up the exact amount of power you need in the moment.

The battery boasts a range of up to 45 miles, and customers also have access to the same upgrade as in the Rook, with a Tesla-sized 48V20ah (960wh) 5000mah battery for $400 and an additional 20 miles of range.

The Kenda Juggernaut tires are perfect for off-roading, and Surface gave us a little surprise by partnering with Kryptek, an industry leader in high-performance technical outdoor adventure apparel design to support the all-new ‘stealth design’.

The 2021 Surface 604 Boar starts at a nifty price of $2,599 USD /$3,599 CAD, with the potential price going up to $2,999 USD /$3,999 CAD should you decide to upgrade to the 48V20ah (960wh) 5000mah battery.

2021 Surface 604 Shred Key Specifications

  • Price: $2,399 USD / $3,299 CAD
  • Buy: Surface 604
  • Motor: eMTB Specific 500W (Peaks At 750W) Bafang / 65 Nm

  • Transmission: SRAM X5 9-speed w/ SRAM 12-34T cassette

The Shred is Surface 604’s e-Mountain Bike, and it’s one of the best in the segment at this price. Widely lauded for its good looks, wide 2.8” CST Patrol tires, excellent frame geometry, and powerful 500W Bafang motor, the Shred offers a big bang for your buck factor when you consider its $2,400 USD starting price.

Like other eBikes in the Surface 604 2021 lineup, the Shred uses a 500W hub-mounted Bafang motor that they have optimized for smooth power delivery. Additional work has also gone into further reducing noise. To provide the “stop” to the Bafang motor’s go, the Shred utilizes TEKTRO Dorado hydraulic disc brakes.

With the 14 Ah battery, riders can expect around 45 miles (~72 km) or range when used with moderate pedal assist. The 20 Ah battery rounds those figures up to 65 mi / 105 km.

The Shred is capable of being unlocked to match class 3 speeds – speed settings can be customized via the larger 3.5” display (compared to the 2020 model year’s 3.2” screen).

The 2021 Shred can be had with a 17.5” or 19.5” frame, ideal for riders 5’2” to 6’6”, and with a 14 or 20 Ah battery. Pricing starts at $2,399 USD for the 14 Ah, or $2,699 USD for the 20 Ah model. The 2021 Shred comes exclusively in a white/black dual-tone colorway.
