I am looking at purchasing the 2008 Ninja 250r and the msrp is $3499. I went to put a deposit on one and the dealer quote me an out the door price of $5,200. Is that correct? To me it seems a bit much. Am I just stuck because they are so popular?
Anyone that has purchased a ninja 250 care to share their cost?
Thanks
Dale

PDIs are above and beyond the MSRP, and range anywhere from $300 to $1000+ depending on the bike and the shop. PDIs are an area you can normally haggle with a dealership over.

I wanted one too until i was quoted $4.5k. If you look through kawiforums, people in less bike-ish states have gotten them below MSRP! I know, not fair…
June 4, 2008 at 3:38 pm #6987AnonymousGuestthanks for the your feedback. I kinda figured I was stuck but I will keep looking and maybe somethng else will come up. Maybe if I wait till the end of summer the 09 will show up and the demand for 08 will go down?
June 4, 2008 at 4:42 pm #6990shagglesParticipantAnother good reason to buy a used bike.
June 5, 2008 at 4:09 pm #7057AnonymousGuestWell I pulled the trigger. A local dealer had one in stock and after some negotiations I got it OTD for $4,500 with a 3 year warrenty and a 5 year Total loss protection so I feel pretty good about it.
One more question, they also tried to offer a prepaid maintenence plan for $1,200 which be the time I checked out was down to $600. That would pay for any scheduled maintneence for 3 years. I didn’t take it but I do have the option to go back. Is that a good deal? How much do dealers charge for the schedule maintence and how many would I have to do in 3 years?
Thanks
June 6, 2008 at 5:03 pm #7095BenParticipantI wouldn’t do it, I think it’s better if you change your own oil and do your own maintenance, then you know everything is tightened to spec and you aren’t forgetting any bolts. Just my 2 cents.

June 13, 2008 at 7:39 pm #7325MattParticipantA few 08’s have just popped up on the local classifieds. $5500 FIRM for a bike that retails for $4300 brand spanking new…
Jeez, talk about demand…My buddy paid for one in April, only to find out the dealership wouldn’t be getting any more until the fall… that really sucks for him.
No doubt about it, Kawi has a hit on their hands… now if only they’d build more so we can buy more!
June 13, 2008 at 9:32 pm #7328xer01977ParticipantThis is certainly an unexpected development for me. I never new that the price for a bike like this could potentially almost double. I was expecting some tax, assembly fees ect. but this is…wow. To be honest, this kinda puts me off on this type of bike. I know that no new bikes will be in til the fall here, and now I am thinking about other 250cc bikes. I’d even consider the Hyosung 250cc model.
June 14, 2008 at 11:09 am #7338JoshGuestI picked up a 250R about a month ago, the dealer had 3 on the showroom floor when I walked in, but now they are impossible to find. A buddy of mine went to get one two weeks after I did and they were sold out at every Kawasaki dealer in the area. The best he was able to do yesterday was to put 600 down (which was the minimum to hold it) to get the next blue one coming in, which he was told would be sometime in july. He also told me that the price had gone up a few hundred since I bought mine, but the dealer told him that since I had bought mine there and referred him to them for his that they would cut him a break and sell it for the same cost I paid. This dealer was in NH so i cant imagine how hard it is to find one in more populated areas.
Just for anyone wondering this was the breakdown of my purchase:
EX250: $3757.00
Freight: $428.00
Assembly and prep: $240.00thats with no haggling (honestly didnt think I could) and I didnt buy any of those exteneded dealer services
June 15, 2008 at 10:01 pm #7364acidpopeParticipantHaggle! My brother went into the local dealer and mentioned, simply mentioned, he could get a 650r for a few hundred cheaper about 40 miles away and without any hesitation the saleman said he’d match it. Sadly my brother is broke so he couldn’t get the bike. Oye.
June 16, 2008 at 3:46 pm #7376RabParticipantSome dealers just make a price up and it’s based on how wet behind the ears they think you are…
I remember when I was buying my first bike, a well known dealer in Fairfield, CA wanted to sell me a new Nighthawk 250 for $5,500.00 (msrp was about $3,600) at the time I think.
Purchase Tax and Registration fees are about the only legitimate fees. Many/most dealers charge a “set-up” fee as well. This is supposed to be for the labor involved in un-crating and assembling the bike.
‘ Haven’t checked recently, but these guys (www.otdcyclesports.com) used to have the lowest OTD (all found) prices in California; by a long chalk.
I actually bought the NH 250 from another dealer (not the one in Fairfield I hasten to add), who, after giving me an inflated quote, price-matched the otdcyclesports price. OTD used to (and probably still do) advertise in Cycle Trader magazine.
Oh yeah, guess who’ll never be back in that dealer in Fairfield again…
June 16, 2008 at 8:55 pm #7423acidpopeParticipant650r was at MSRP before price match. Infact in my area (MA) I can’t recall seeing bikes over MSRP, even ones like the 250r which are sold out. Any dealer selling over MSRP I wouldn’t stay more than 2 minutes at. Just too easy to go a few miles down the road and not get the shaft.
