For those of you who bought brand new bikes, how many of you followed the manufacturer’s recommended break in guidelines?
I have to admit, those guidelines went out the window the second day I had my bike… puttering around highway 101 @ under 4K rpms just wasn’t gonna cut it.
June 21, 2008 at 12:07 am #7583JoshGuestI bought a new 250R about a month ago and never kept it under 4k, but I try not to take it much over 6-7k. My first day on it I tried to keep it between 4-5k rpm and there was just no way I could maintain that speed getting around, I would hold up traffic. So far no issues, I have been told by other riders that I work with to break it in the way you plan to ride it, not sure how true that is tho.

I did try not to rev too high going through the gears, but 48mph? Really??

June 21, 2008 at 9:31 am #7598JirikiParticipantbrand new 08 250R, i am 100 miles away from finishing the break in period…
recommendation was 500 miles < 4K then another 500 miles < 6K... I added 1K to each of these limits and did all of my first 500 miles riding in streets that were 35 mph or less. I also made sure there were a ton of stop signs and such so that I was walking through the revs instead of just pinging at the max for that break in part... i will probably upgrade in a year or two to a bigger bike, so my 250R will last at least as long as I need it
btw, this took a LOT of time and effort… and it also means that your first experiences riding will be out in traffic with soccer moms… but you will also get good a shifting and avoiding things
