Depending on your oil ratio and the jetting to start with, running premix can cause a lean condition. Also premix will always smoke more than an injection system.

Before oil injection arrived on the scene, standard motor oil was an accepted emergency oil for 2 strokes, usuall mixed at 25 to 1.

Do you mean an amp meter or a voltage meter? An amp meter directly to the battery will never show anything. If it is a voltmeter a better way to do this is to NOT connect directly to the battery but connect to the switched 12 volts from the ignition switch. That is the black wire. Then the ignition ...

Your light issue is most likely a ground issue, either missing (most likely) or bad (dirty). Make sure all the green wires are plugged in and disconnect them all and plug them back in several times. When lights interact like this they are getting their grounds thru each other.
