1998 Yamaha Riva 125cc WONT START

Post by Redscoot98 »

Hello Everyone -

I just purchased a 1998 Yamaha Riva 125. This thing looks brand new. The owners manual and original receipt from dealer in 98 were nicely sitting in the glove box. Unfortunately it will not start. The previous owner said that he was driving a few months ago and it bogged out on him. He took it to the shop to have carb cleaned but it still wouldn’t start and he just wanted to get ride of it. It has spark, fuel, compression. I sprayed starter fluid in intake and still did not start. It only turns over.

Hoping you all can help point me in the right direction. I’m thinking about removing carb and cleaning out jets tomorrow.

Thanks! :D

you forgot to check the one thing that appears to be missing and needed for combustion -- air. Check for a clogged air filter.

Thanks for the quick reply. There is currently no air filter (on order). I have the air box disconnected, just the open end on carb. Will this have much of an effect? I would imagine if I shot it with starter fluid it would at least try to fire up. All the engine does is turn.

That battery sounds weak. Have you charged it? Could also be a bad bystarter or what they call an "autochoke". When those go, it becomes very hard to start the scooter.

I have it on the charger now. The battery is new.
I removed the electric choke on the side of the carb and pushed the choke in and the scooter actually sounded like it was going to start for a split second.

I think I’m going to wait for the air filter to come in so I can make sure the air flow is correct. I’ll then try to manually press the choke again and see if it will start. If it does I’ll replace the electric choke.

Installed new air filter today but still won’t start. Also installed new spark plug and checked spark again. Everything looks good it just keeps on turning over.

Any thoughts?

Draining fuel now. Petcock seems to work fine as I’m putting vacuum on it to drain fuel thru the petcock. What gas do you all use for these?

Got her running!!! It’s cold over here on the east coast! Ended up manually turning engine with a drill and she fired right up. Once it got warm I drained the oil and put some 10w30 in it. Going to DMV to get it tagged tomorrow. Planning to check timing and really clean out carbs this weekend. Not bad for $180!
